"When I choose to see the good side of things, when I am kind, I am not being naïve. It is strategic and necessary. It's how I learned to survive through everything."

Name: Milo Taylor.
Age: 19 (As of 1st of April, 2001).
Date of birth:5th April, 1981.
Place of birth: Muldraugh, Kentucky, U.S.A.
Occupation: Student.
Family: Parents (estranged), older brother (Lucas Taylor).

Backstory:

Milo was a very bubbly and chatty child, until the other kids noticed that he seemed... different. In conservative Kentucky the lord does not look kindly upon the gays in most households, and this was no exception for Milo. His parents were usually too busy fighting to question why their youngest son was different than the others, but when Mr Taylor did focus on Milo, it usually took the form of beatings. Despite this, Milo still managed to achieve good grades and mostly avoided bullying, graduating in June of 1999. While nervous around strangers and much quieter then before, he still maintained his unique excitable charm for his few friends. Dreaming of college as a way to finally live a life without hiding who he was, he spent what he hoped to be his final year in Muldraugh saving money by working at his part time job in the town over, at a book store in West Point.

On the way back from work, Milo would often stop at his favourite food stop - the Spiffo's at the crossroads in between Dixie and West Point. Spiffo's meant a lot to Milo... But over time the cute cashier behind Spiffo's counter also grabbed his attention. Milo's world ended months before the outbreak ended everyone else's. Forcibly split from his boyfriend by their respective parents at the start of September, Milo was then pushed onto the streets, his parents refusing to accept the societal shame that a gay son would bring them in their deeply religious community. Milo then began bouncing between the couches of a few high school friends while frantically trying to figure out if he could still make college in phone calls with admission staff and his older Vancouver based brother, Lucas. Lacking essential documents held at his parents, the application process to live in Canada took much longer then normal, and Milo did not land in Vancouver until March 30th 2000, after over six months in various forms of homelessness. He had barely settled in when the rumours of a lethal infection began to circulate... By the time it was clear that the U.S. was going to fall, Milo and Lucas make the decision to leave urban Vancouver and head towards Lucas's hunting cabin in Kokanee Glacier park. By this point, they were not the only group heading east into the Canadian hinterland seeking protection and safety, as scores of other refugees from across North America flooded Canada's borders.

On the outskirts of Vancouver, Milo and Lucas were separated during a refugee riot over a few crates of supplies provided by the creaking Canadian government. The pair had agreed that if they were separated, they would wait for one another in New Denver, before heading out into the wilderness to the cabin. As Milo approaches New Denver, he only hopes that his brother is safe, and that the rumours of an active UN base in the area were true...

MILO's JOURNAL

ENTRY ONE:

1st of April, 2001.

Location: Unknown house in New Denver, BC, Canada.

I found this journal in an abandoned tourist shop in Vancouver. Not long after I lost my brother, Lucas, in that stupid riot. It has a really soft leather cover and writing on it feels so nice and I think the paper is super premium or something. In reality though, it just adds to the weight I'm carrying, but... If anyone other than me reads this, I want you to try and find my brother, Lucas, and tell him what happened to me. It'll all be in this journal, everything. Wait no, not *everything* everything. Just my story, in one hopefully easy to read accessible space. I think he would want to know what happened, and this might be the only way how. It's a selfish request, but it might be my dying wish too. Don't let me down stranger!

P.S: I've attached a photo of Lucas below so you know what he looks like. Just don't mention his ear rings or the scar when you meet him and you'll be fine, I swear he isn't as scary as he looks, a real cinnamon bun really! And please treasure it, it's the only photo I have of him.

ENTRY TWO:

5th of April, 2001.

Location: Safehouse north of New Denver, BC, Canada. (Just off route six. The one with the pool table and the cute indoor plants, you'll know it when you see it.)

Brother, I have failed you… if I were to die today (and I REALLY feel like dying today) it would be the fault of some fucking HIPPIES. Yes I thought they were extinct too. Didn't you used to say you would get drunk and high in Vancouver? HOW, I ask, for this hangover is the worst! Anyways, happy birthday to me I guess. I never thought that I'd be able to celebrate my birthday in the apocalypse but somehow fate intervened. It was nice really, despite my sore head now. Alisitr and the other guys in the RV said they were gonna leave early in the morning. I'm not sure where old man Dennis went, but I hope he's ok. I may or may not have slept it until noon... Well, my point is if you meet a Dennis or an Alistir they probably know about me, and I think you can trust them. Just don't trust them with the uh 'special mushrooms' unless you want to go on a wild one. But damn, I wish you were there Lucas, I needed you to teach my how to dance!

I would have loved to have celebrated my 21st with you, brother. Hope you're safe...

ENTRY THREE:

12th of April, 2001.

Location: Safehouse North of New Denver, B.C., Canada. (The one north of the old one... its deep in the woods).

I've decided to move... I hope that's ok, but the old safehouse was just too big for me to feel safe in y'know? So I moved to a smaller one nearby, further into the woods. I haven't heard anything from old man Dennis since the party and I'm really starting to get worried. But I guess he's just moved on somewhere, though I am sad he didn't say goodbye. I still hear Alisitir speaking on the radio every now and then so I know he's ok.

It's almost two weeks past when we were supposed to meet up in New Denver, but perhaps you were just delayed? I barely made it on time myself, and that was with a few fortunate hitch hikes here and there. I hope you can make it here soon! I think this new cabin is where I am going to base myself semi-permanently for the summer, at least until you get here, and then we can decide to stay or keep going northwards or even find your cabin in the remote hills. But until we make that decision I'm going to survive here and try and help the survivors around here. Some guy called Silus has even set up a general store! So when this snow clears up, maybe I'll spend a nice afternoon shopping.

See, it's not that bad being alone here after all!

See you soon Lucas!

It snows late in the frozen north...

ENTRY FOUR:

22nd of April, 2001.

Location: Silus' General Store, South of Rosebery, B.C., Canada.

This might be it Lucas. Something got me, I'm bleeding all over the place. I managed to crawl to this old car though, I think I'm safe for now. It doesn't see me yet. That thing, it managed to stab me deep, right in the top of my thigh. Silus, Arthur and Clem are still out there fighting it... I don't have much time, if you find this, this might be how I died. If you meet any of those names, thank them, they tried to save me.

Ok, once I stop the bleeding, I need to be brave. I need to go out into the fog and help them ward this creature off. If you find me Lucas, make sure I'm ok and if I am not ok... just don't leave me to rot. But once you find me, don't stay here in this county.

Run.

He can see you.

'...I see you...'

INTERLUDE ONE:

Above a howling wind, a broken ambulance siren can be heard, punctuated with screams and occasional gunshots. Several different voices can be heard.

Voice One: "Clem! Clem!!! Where are you!??"

Voice Two: "Will you shut the fuck up and just pick up that shotgun I gave you!?"

Voice Three: "You got bandages for that leg right? here, just help me grab that plank and -."

Insane, maniacal laughter fills the air. A fourth, almost inhuman voice is heard:

"AH HAHAHAHAHAHAHA" "I ssSEEeeEee YoUuuU!"

The transmission abruptly ends.

The above was broadcast via radio shortly after the previous entry four of Milo's journal was written. It was also posted in the Days End discord public radio channel.

Posthumous notes:

Voice One: Milo Taylor.

Voice Two: Silus Mitchell.

Voice Three: Arthur Williams.

ENTRY FIVE:

25th of April, 2001.

Location: New Denver Home Owners Association Base, B.C., Canada.

I lived! I thought I should just start this entry with that in case you were worried. And, now that I am not covered in my own blood scrawling in the back of a car, I can actually write what happened legibly. Honestly though, my handwriting in the last entry was a crime, and I know how much you like calligraphy Lucas, even if you don't let anyone know that.

It's really hard to sum up what happened without sounding like a crazy person, but seeing as the dead walk the earth I hope you can believe what I tell you. Because what attacked us at Silus' shop... I just don't think it was human, and it wasn't a zombie either. The fog came in from nowhere, the wind went from a breeze to a gale, and then the noise! Sirens, screaming, gunshots, explosions! Clem, who is probably the most rational of all of us there described it as "psychological warfare." But the way it happened can't be truly rationalised, not in my mind at least, though perhaps it is just trauma, I just don't know.

Firstly Clem disappeared. She was giving me a lift back to the house as the truck had broken down at the store, and luckily she was in the area. Then we stopped so I could grab a few things out of my truck and when i turned around she was just... gone. That's when the fog started and the wind picked up. I heard gunshots, screams, but it wasn't Clem's voice, and at this point I was so freaked out I just ran back to the store to find help. Silus and Arthur were still there, haggling over some thing or other, and I was just screaming Clem's name trying to find her, hoping the shots I was hearing weren't aimed at her. Looking back I am... ashamed of how I acted. I've fought hundreds of zombies, I've faced men with guns, faced father, but this was different. I just panicked, I couldn't even breath properly, as if I could feel a strangers hands on my throat. Luckily Silus isn't daunted by anything, and he stopped me running into the woods to look for Clem.

I remember Silus told me once that "you always got to look out for number one first." And that's how he has acted for the most part, it's his philosophy almost, as a person and a shop keeper. Not in the business of charity or selflessness, or even courtesy, and in these times I have to respect that outlook even if I disagree with it - it's certainly done ok for him. But at the same time, he also ran after me, out of cover and into danger, to stop me from making a stupid decision. Not sure how much of 'number one' was reflected in that choice, but either way I am grateful for it. I think he maybe cares more then he lets on. So if you meet him Lucas, and he tells you to look out for number one first, know that 1) he's *probably* full of shit and 2) I think he will help you if you ask. I've attached a photo of him so you'll know him.

He almost dragged me back to the shop and yelled at me to pull myself together and thrust a shotgun into my arms. And then we fought. That's when my memory starts to falter a bit. I keep getting caught up on two scenes, playing in my head over and over again... The first, was when it stabbed me. We were in a circle, guns pointed into the fog, the noise all around. Then I saw a figure, at first I thought it might have been Clem, but pretty quick I realised it wasn't. It started coming towards me, and I should have fired! But I couldn't, because it wasn't a zombie - it's walk was too co-ordinated, it didn't shuffle or groan the like the others. Then it rushed at me, faster then I thought possible. I hadn't even registered that it was coming towards me when I felt the pain in my leg, and then it was gone, lost in the fog again. It might be the trauma but it was practically unhuman how damn fast it was! I was completely powerless...

The second scene is what keeps me awake at night though. After I got stabbed, the blood... there was so much and all my critical thinking that Silus had somehow yelled into me was now shot to hell. Well, stabbed to hell actually. I just started shooting into the fog as I hobbled inside the abandoned house by the shop. Then! Clem returned! Somehow she was back like nothing had happened, immediately taking control of the situation in that soldier way of hers. I was beyond control at that point, huddling in the bathroom, the shotgun thrown aside, my pistol shaking in my hands pointed at the door. My leg was bleeding so much, and I collapsed on the ground. Even so I began to think that I was safe, that it would focus on the others shooting into the fog at shadows outside. But then I heard a noise - a floorboard creaking, light footsteps, and giggling? I knew it wasn't Arthur or Clem or Silus, I could hear their voices in the other direction. Then silence. I clutched my gun closer, and the door flew open - literally, right off the hinges, and it rushed at me again, just like before. This time I didn't hesitate. I fired seven shots as fast as I could pull the trigger. SEVEN. At almost point blank range. I'm a terrible shot, but there's no way they all missed. Surely? But no body crumpled to the ground. It's speed never slowed, it just swept out the room as fast as it had entered.

That's how it ended too, as fast as it had begun. The fog suddenly cleared, and we were all left, standing around with our weapons like idiots. Clem was wonderful, immediately stemmed the bleeding in my leg and drove me the hell out of there. He dropped me off at my house, and I slept like a baby. Unfortunately, my leg felt in worse shape when came to, and without a car I was a bit stranded... as fortune would have it though, I some biker girl called Jia stumbled upon my house, and seeing how bad a shape my leg was in, rushed me to a Doctor friend of hers. And that's how I ended up here! I've been writing for a while now so I'll stop here. Besides I don't want to talk about getting my stitches right now, my leg is still too sore for me to want to relive that pain...

This was scary! But I'm going to try to be less afraid now. I need to be here for when you arrive after all!

See you soon Lucas!
